Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Unattested Cattle.

16.

Mr. Donnellan

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that attempts were recently made to export from Dublin a large number of cattle which were not fully attested; if he is satisfied that the administrative controls under the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication scheme are sufficient to prevent abuses which bring the good name of Irish cattle exports, especially from the West of Ireland, into disrepute; and what action he proposes to take in regard to the recent attempts to circumvent the export regulations.

The examination by officers of my Department of cattle presented for shipment at North Wall, Dublin, on a recent date, brought to light certain irregularities which it was thought proper to ask the Gardaí to investigate. These investigations are proceeding. It would be well-nigh impossible in a scheme such as the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme to prevent abuses completely, but I am satisfied that the present safeguards under the scheme are as effective as can reasonably be expected.
