Vol. 196 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Fertilisers.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has seen a report to the effect that the setting up of the nitrogenous fertiliser factory at Arklow, County Wicklow, will mean dearer fertiliser; and, if so, if he will ensure that the cost of this essential product to farmers will not be increased, if necessary by providing subsidies.

I have seen the report referred to by Deputy Flanagan. I would refer the Deputy to what I have said on this subject on 21st February, 1962, in the course of the discussion on a Supplementary Estimate for my Department (Dáil Debates, Volume 193, No. 3, column 482).

Would the Minister be prepared to give an assurance to the farmers and other interests concerned that there will not be an increase in the cost of fertilisers?

If the Deputy refers to the debate I have quoted he will see that the Minister has already said that.

Would the Minister say what the Minister said?

May I enquire if it is a fact that steps will be taken to have a suitable subsidy made so that the farmers will have an assurance that there will be no increase in the price?

If the Deputy refers to the report he will find assurance on that matter.

Then we may take it that we will not be paying another penny on the cigarettes?

The Minister gave me an assurance in the House that we would not.
