Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Rehousing Applications.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a number of the applicants who are on the Cork Corporation priority list for rehousing and who are recommended for rehousing are unable to obtain accommodation from Cork Corporation owing to the fact that vacancies arising are being absorbed by tenants from houses which are the subject of demolition, clearance or closing orders; and if he will give particulars of the number of tenants who are so affected.

I understand that in recent months local authority houses becoming available for letting in Cork city were required almost entirely for the rehousing of persons displaced as a result of slum clearance operations of the corporation and action to secure the closure or demolition of individual unfit houses. The number of such cases now on hands is 60 and the housing authority expect that these will be accommodated within the next few months.

In the period since November, 1960, Cork Corporation made 515 new lettings of which 135 were made to families displaced as a result of slum clearance operations and the closure or demolition of unfit houses, and the balance of 380 to other applicants on the waiting list.
