Vol. 196 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eye Cornea Bank.

7.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider instituting a publicity campaign for the formation of an eye cornea bank for people who would benefit by a cornea graft.

I feel that, on reflection, the Deputy will agree with me that a publicity campaign to encourage donor material for corneal grafts is hardly the most appropriate method of proceeding. The general question has, however, been under consideration and a particular approach to the problem is at present being tried out. In the meantime, I would again direct attention to the fact that, as I intimated in reply to a Parliamentary Question on 22nd February last, there is no legal barrier to obtaining, for the very meritorious purpose of restoring sight to the living, the eyes of deceased persons if the consent of the next-of-kin is forthcoming.
