Vol. 196 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Navigation Employees.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of employees responsible to his Department on Shannon navigation; if he will state the rates of pay for such employees; when in the case of lock-keepers the rates of such pay were last increased; if he will indicate the hours which these employees are expected to work; and if he has plans for immediate increases in pay and improved conditions of employment.

The number of employees on the Shannon Navigation is 31.

The rates of pay vary from £12 a year for a part-time Caretaker to £12 15s. Od. a week for a Fitter. With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, a statement of the various rates will be circulated with the Official Report.

The rates of pay of lock-keepers were last increased from the 1st April 1958.

There are no fixed hours of attendance for grades such as lock-keepers. These employees are expected to be available to open and close the locks at all reasonable hours.

Proposals for increases in pay for lock-keepers and certain other employees on the Shannon Navigation are under consideration and a decision is expected at an early date.

Might I ask the Parliamentary Secretary to consider sympathetically the financial circumstances of lock-keepers who, as he is aware, have to work very long hours and whose pay has not been increased since 1958?
