Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Irish Cotton Mills' Requirements.

134.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether in view of the opinion expressed in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Organisation on the Cotton, Linen and Rayon Industry that the Irish mills' requirements of US cotton are sufficiently large to justify direct sailings from the US to this country, thus reducing transport costs which militate against the competitive position of the Irish cotton industry, he will investigate the possibility of arranging, with the co-operation of the Irish cotton industry, that such direct sailings should take place.

The arrangement of shipping accommodation for any particular commodity is a normal commercial function. I understand that fairly frequent direct shipping services from US Gulf and South Atlantic ports to this country are already available. It is a matter for the cotton industry to utilise these services to the best advantage and, if necessary, to co-ordinate their arrangements for the purchase of raw cotton in order to ensure worthwhile cargoes for ship-owners. I would also suggest that the industry might discuss with Irish Shipping Ltd. the feasibility of arranging for direct shipments of raw cotton. The services of my Department can be availed of if required in making any necessary contacts.
