Vol. 196 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Borough Condemned Houses.

145.

asked the Minister for Local Government how many condemned (i) houses and (ii) tenement rooms are occupied in (a) Dublin, (b) Cork, (c) Limerick and (d) Waterford.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available in my Department. The housing authorities for the County Boroughs of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford, to which it is presumed the question refers, have been asked to furnish the particulars requested, in so far as they are available, and they will be sent to the Deputy when received.

Might I inquire from the Minister if he has any approximate time at which he expects to receive these reports?

I have asked them for the surveys and it is impossible to say when I will receive them, but I do not think it should be very long.

Is not each local authority carrying out a survey at the moment?

Each local authority was and is expected to carry out such surveys so this information might be available from them.

In view of the fact that they are in the process of carrying out these surveys the information required should not be too far away.

I would not say it is.

If there is to be a housing Bill before the House shortly we would require to have some approximate figures if the legislation is to be adequately considered.

The survey that has been sought and which, in some cases, has been supplied does not give the information requested by the Deputy. It will show the number of condemned houses and houses unsuitable for habitation, but it will not give the number of such premises or unsuitable rooms that are being lived in. We have had to ask the local authorities for that information.

The local authorities would not give us information about houses that are not being lived in in that survey.

No one had suggested that they would.
