Vol. 196 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Food Advisory Committee.

1.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Health if it is intended to implement the recommendations of the Food Advisory Committee regarding the manufacture of food and drink referred to in a statement of the Government Information Bureau quoted in a Dublin newspaper on 23rd April last, and, if so, when.

I have accepted generally the recommendations made to me by the Food Advisory Committee regarding the presence of preservatives and colouring matters in food intended for human consumption, and draft regulations had been prepared to give effect to this decision. Before submitting them to the other Government Departments concerned and the National Health Council, the draft regulations had to be further examined as some doubts arose as to the legal authority for the implementation of some of the recommendations of the Committee. These matters have now been disposed of and amended draft regulations are being prepared, which, at the request of the Food Advisory Committee, will be submitted to that Committee for its further consideration. In the meantime the earlier regulations remain in operation.
