Vol. 196 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withdrawal of Drug.

2.

asked the Minister for Health the circumstances in which the drug Softenon has been withdrawn from sale to the public; and why it was not withdrawn in this country until June, 1962, in view of the fact that it was withdrawn in Britain and Germany in November, 1961.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave to Deputy Kyne on 26th instant concerning the discontinuance of the supply of thalidomide which was marketed here under the name "Softenon". This drug, together with other preparations containing thalidomide, was withdrawn from sale by the manufacturers because it had come under suspicion in connection with the incidence of certain types of neo-natal deformities.

As I stated in the reply referred to, the supply of these substances was discontinued in December last and supplies in the hands of the pharmaceutical trade and doctors were recalled shortly afterwards.
