Vol. 196 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Survey of Mayo Mineral Deposits.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will arrange to have a survey made of lead and copper deposits at Shaeffry, Drummin, Westport, County Mayo.

The lead and copper deposits at Shaeffry near Drummin, Westport, County Mayo, have already been surveyed and the information obtained is available for inspection by any interested person at the office of the Geological Survey. I am advised that the likelihood of discovering workable deposits of lead and copper in the area is not such as to justify the expenditure of public moneys on a further survey.

On what reports does the Minister base his statement that the deposits are not there?

Various surveys have been conducted, including one in 1922, by the Geological Survey. These reports can be seen in the office. Investigations were carried out also in 1950 and 1952 of the mine plan and the character of the deposits. These are also available for inspection in the office.

Could the Minister say who carried out the latest surveys?

The Geological Survey Office.
