Vol. 196 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ban Ghardaí in Dublin and Cork.

41.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Ban Ghardaí in Dublin and Cork; the number engaged in plain clothes detective work; and whether it is his intention in the near future to increase the number of Ban Ghardaí for duty in areas other than Dublin and Cork.

There are 18 Ban Ghardaí in Dublin and six in Cork. None of them is employed full-time on plain clothes work but they do particular types of duty in plain clothes when this is considered desirable. Eight more Ban Ghardaí have been recruited and, on completion of training, they will be assigned to wherever their services will be most valuable.

Can the Minister indicate to what areas they will be assigned?

Not at this stage. That will be decided when they become available. They will be assigned to wherever the need is greatest.
