Vol. 196 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revival of Turkey Production.

32.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what plans his Department have for a revival of turkey production for export, having regard to the fact that there was a decline of 25,000 in exports of turkeys last year; and if he will carry out a country-wide campaign to advise producers regarding the profitable production of good quality birds in order to avoid a greater setback to the industry this year.

Improved breeding stock from superior strains of turkeys are being distributed by my Department in increasing numbers each year to hatching egg supply farms and turkey cock stations. Grants are also provided by the Department for houses and equipment on supply farms. The facilities available and the necessity for the efficient production of good-quality birds to meet the present day very competitive market conditions are brought to the attention of producers through the activities of the advisory staffs of the Committees of Agriculture and by means of the press and radio.
