Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance: Evidence of Unemployment.

88.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will reduce to one per week the number of occasions on which recipients of unemployment assistance resident in rural areas will have to sign evidence of unemployment at employment exchanges and other social welfare offices.

As I have already explained in reply to somewhat similar questions from the Deputy on the 16th May and on the 17th July of this year, I am satisfied that the arrangements for furnishing evidence of unemployment by recipients of unemployment assistance in rural areas are reasonable and that they represent the minimum safeguard necessary for the prevention of abuse.

I must stress the fact that it is only those unemployed persons who are resident within four miles of a local office of my Department who are required to attend there more than once a week. I am not prepared to relax the requirements in respect of such persons.
