Vol. 197 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Communist China: Membership of UN.

17.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether Ireland voted in the General Assembly of the United Nations in favour of the Russian proposal for membership of Communist China of the United Nations; whether any speech was made on the occasion; if so, if he will give its contents; and, if not, why no indication of this country's policy was given.

The Irish delegation voted in the General Assembly on 30th October against the draft resolution to which the question refers. The draft resolution was rejected by 56 votes to 42 with 12 abstentions.

The delegation did not speak in the debate as the Minister for External Affairs had explained our attitude in regard to a similar Soviet draft resolution in his statement to the General Assembly on 11th December, 1961. The Deputy will find the text of that statement in the publication "Ireland at the United Nations—1961."

18.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Government is in favour of the admission of Communist China to the United Nations.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply I have just given to Question No. 17 and also to the answer I gave to a question put by the Deputy on 21st March, 1961.

There could be a danger that the Minister for External Affairs might vote for Communist China. He did it before.

Have you been to Warsaw lately?

It is a pity that I did not go a little bit further because I would have met some of your friends out there.
