Vol. 197 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decimal Coinage.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if it will be necessary to change the currency and coinage to a decimal system, should Ireland join the Common Market.

The Treaty of Rome does not require the adoption by member States of the European Economic Community of a decimal system of currency and coinage.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to take any steps soon to prepare for a change-over to a decimal coinage system.

In February last, I announced my intention of setting up a working party, representative of the Central Bank and Government Departments, to advise on the appropriate time for adopting decimal currency and on the steps necessary to effect the change in the most economical way. The working party commenced their investigations in April and have already made considerable progress.
