Vol. 197 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suppressors on Electrical Equipment.

87.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will now introduce legislation requiring suppressors to be provided on all electrical equipment for the purpose of preventing electrical interference, particularly with radio and television reception.

As I informed the Deputy on 9th February, 1961, I already have certain powers under the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926, and the Broadcasting Authority Act, 1960, to deal with electrical interference of the kind he mentions and I do not consider that further legislation is required for the purpose he has in mind—at least at this stage.

I might add that the matter of making statutory regulations to prevent undue interference with wireless telegraphy has been under consideration for some time by a special Advisory Committee. As a result of examination of the Committee's first report Regulations will shortly be made to deal with the problem of interference caused by small electric motors. These will be followed in due course by Regulations dealing with undue interference caused by other types of equipment.
