Vol. 197 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of School Building Extensions.

111.

asked the Minister for Education the estimated costs of extensions to (a) St. Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin, and (b) Rathmines Technical School and College of Commerce, Dublin.

112.

andMr. Jones asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of (a) St. Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin, and (b) Rathmines Technical School and College of Commerce, Dublin, the estimated cost of extensions.

113.

asked the Minister for Education the cost to the Exchequer of the extensions to St. Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin, and the estimated total cost of such extensions.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 111, 112 and 113 together.

The cost of the reconstruction and extension of St. Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin, all of which will be borne by the Exchequer, is estimated at £1,200,000. Proposals for the extension of the College of Commerce, Rathmines, have not yet reached the definitive stage and so it is not possible to estimate the cost of the project.

114.

asked the Minister for Education the cost of extensions to (a) Bolton Street Technical School, Dublin, and (b) Kevin Street School of Technology, Dublin, and the amounts of the State grant.

115.

andMr. Jones asked the Minister for Education the cost of the extensions and the amounts of the State grant to (a) Bolton Street Technical School, Dublin and (b) Kevin Street School of Technology, Dublin.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 114 and 115 together.

(a) The estimated overall cost of the extension of Bolton Street College of Technology is £500,000, but the final figure is not yet available. (b) The estimated cost of the new College of Technology at Kevin Street is £1,500,000; as no contract has yet been entered into for the building, I am not in a position to give a firm figure at this stage.

The Bolton Street project was financed by loans raised by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee and no State grant was involved; while no proposals have yet been made for the financing of the Kevin Street project, it is anticipated that it will be financed in the same way.

116.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in regard to the extensions to (a) Bolton Street College of Technology, (b) Kevin Street College of Technology and (c) Rathmines College of Commerce and Technical School (i) the cost of such extensions to the Exchequer and (ii) the cost of such extensions to the local authority.

The Bolton St. College extension was financed by means of loans raised by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee on the security of its own resources. Repayments, which will amount to about £40,000 yearly over 25 years, will be met by the Committee from its ordinary revenue. Based on the proportions in which the State and the rating authority contribute to the Committee's funds it can be said that about £24,000 annually will be paid by the State and £12,000 annually by the rating authority.

No proposals have yet been put before my Department for the financing of the new college in Kevin Street or the replacement or extension of Rathmines College.
