Vol. 197 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charges for Hairdressing Training

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that certain people have set up hairdressing schools and have been known to charge as much as 100 guineas for a six months' course; and, if so, if he will take some steps to protect people who propose to take these courses, as pupils who complete the courses are not qualified to obtain employment as hairdressers.

Attendance at schools of hairdressing is not regarded as employment by way of apprenticeship under the provisions of existing apprenticeship legislation and therefore I have no function in relation to the training provided by such schools. I am not satisfied that it would be possible by legislative action to exercise control over hairdressing schools without interfering with the right of individuals to acquire skills for their own personal benefit or satisfaction.
