Vol. 197 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National College of Art Appointment.

40.

asked the Minister for Education what is the purpose of the appointment, and what are the precise functions of the person recently appointed by him, in connection with design in the National College of Art.

The Organising Consultant appointed to the School of Design in the National College of Art has been assigned the task of drawing up a scheme for the selection and training of industrial and graphic designers for industry and commerce in Ireland. His duties subsequently will involve being in charge of the operation of the scheme and undertaking part of the instruction in design.

May I ask the Minister if it is intended to set up a separate school of design, or if it is intended to maintain whatever system of teaching in design we now have?

This appointment is the first of a programme which the Government intend to carry out in relation to design but at the present moment I am not prepared to go further in public announcements on the matter. What I can say is that the man appointed has done excellent work up to now and when his work is ripe for further development, I will take the necessary steps.
