Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Irish-American Pensioners.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that thousands of Irish-Americans who wish to settle down in this country on their social welfare pensions are prevented from doing so by having to pay a tax on them; and if he is prepared to bring in legislation to alter the position.

The answer to both parts of the question is in the negative.

Do I take it from the Minister that now it is the Fianna Fáil policy to see that those people who emigrate will not come back to this country?

That is drawing a wrong inference.

Is it not a fact that these pensions are already taxed in the United States?

Is it not a fact that these people have made representations to the Minister, with a view to easing their entry into this country?

I had a lot of representations of that kind but I could not give into them all.
