Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Retired State Employees.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount due since 1st August last to retired State employees, and the number concerned.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of 13th instant to a question put by Deputy Cosgrave on the subject of pensions increases. The particulars required by the Deputy are not available. The Deputy will appreciate that the amount of increases remaining unpaid at any particular time cannot be known until the stage when the outstanding cases have been calculated and payment authorised. The number of cases outstanding changes from day to day, and I do not consider that the work involved in ascertaining the number of cases would be justified as it would interfere with the progress of the actual work of calculating and issuing pension increases.

Does the Minister still hope to clear all these cases before Christmas?

I am still optimistic.

Hope burns brightly still.
