Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions.

46.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that there is a considerable number of old-age pension claims and appeals outstanding; and if he will have the completion of investigations expedited.

Some 16,500 claims and questions relating to non-contributory old age pensions and 3,500 appeals arising from them are received annually. Naturally, at any given time a considerable number of these are at various stages of decision. In some cases the claims are still under investigation; in others, the investigations have been completed and decisions by a local pension committee or by an appeals officer are pending. In some instances, the latter decides, generally in the interests of the claimant, that it is necessary to obtain further information before giving a decision. Every effort is made and will continue to be made, to ensure that decisions are given with the least possible delay.
