Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Galway Turbary.

58.

asked the Minister for Lands the area where it is proposed to divide the 800 acres of turbary in County Galway; how it is proposed to divide it; what type of applicant will qualify; and if he will state the present position in relation to such division.

This bog is situated mainly at Shannagurraun some three miles north of Spiddal. It is proposed to distribute it by providing each allottee with a right of turbary over a separate, specifically defined plot. The claims of all applicants for turbary will be fully considered by the Land Commission but preference will necessarily be given to landowners in the locality who are in need of turbary. The extensive development works, which must precede allotment, have been authorised and the necessary funds sanctioned; these works will commence shortly and, if at all possible, allocations from the bog will be made in time for the next turfcutting season.

Could the Minister indicate what townlands will qualify?

I cannot so indicate. That is a matter for the Land Commission.

Could the Minister indicate if a city of Galway applicant will be considered?

All applicants will be considered, whether they come from Eyre Square or the bog itself.

Will they qualify if they come from Eyre Square?

The Deputy might wait and see.

It might be too late then.
