Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - School Textbooks.

99.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the hardship caused to large families by the too frequent changes of textbooks in schools; and if he will take steps to remedy the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of 15th February, 1962, to a similar question. I have nothing to add to that reply.

In view of the many complaints by parents about frequency of change of textbooks will the Minister do something to prevent such frequent changes?

I have continually asked headmasters and managers to reduce the number of changes of textbooks to a minimum. I have been unable to get any evidence of the great number of complaints the Deputy speaks of but, if the Deputy or any other Deputy can submit evidence to me that there is undue frequency of change of textbooks, I will have the matter examined. I have been unable to come to grips with the problem because I have been unable to get the evidence.
