Vol. 198 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Employment in Motor Assembly Industry.

48.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he can give any indication as to the likelihood that the motor assembly industry will survive without significant disemployment, should Ireland attain full membership of the EEC.

In the circumstances of the motor vehicle assembly industry, it would be unrealistic to suppose that it would not be peculiarly vulnerable in free trade conditions. A survey of the industry has been undertaken by the Committee on Industrial Organisation. Simultaneously, discussions with individual firms in the industry are proceeding in my Department. I propose to await the outcome of these activities before giving any indication on the lines of the Deputies' query.

Has the Minister taken note of the report of one economist closely associated with the Government that this industry will go to the wall on our entry into the Common Market?

The report that I would have regard to is the report of the Committee on Industrial Organisation.

Will the Minister say when the report will be available?

In the course of a few weeks.

Question No. 50 postponed.
