Vol. 198 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Reception in County Offaly.

74.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the complaints from the owners of television sets that they cannot obtain good reception in the districts of Tullamore and Clara, County Offaly; and that the modern 625 line sets are not giving the signal in a satisfactory manner; and if an effort will be made to improve transmission to these areas with the least possible delay.

I have received no complaints regarding the quality of reception in the districts mentioned and I understand that complaints have not been received by the Authority. Under the Broadcasting Authority Act, 1960, it is the function of the Authority to provide a satisfactory television service and the Deputy's question is, therefore, more proper to the Authority. I also understand that viewers in these districts should be able to obtain a satisfactory signal provided their installations are adequate and are correctly adjusted.

Could the Minister give a guarantee that if such a complaint were sent to the Authority it would be entertained?

If complaints of this sort in respect of this or any other area relating to reception are sent to the Authority, the Authority's engineers will investigate all such complaints in the normal way.
