Vol. 198 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Cost of Living Increases.

6.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach if he can yet give an approximate estimate of the total cost-of-living increases likely to follow increases in the prices of essential commodities, including food, should Ireland enter the EEC as a full member.

Because of the wide range of commodities involved in the calculations on which the consumer price index is based and the difficulty of predicting price movements for each such commodity, it is impossible to say whether our participation in the European Economic Community as a member would result in a net increase or decrease in the consumer price index. Any changes which may occur would be gradual.
