Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Steel Holdings: Lay-off of Workers.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is a fact that sixty further employees of Irish Steel Holdings, Haulbowline, County Cork, were laid off during the week 19th to 24th November; if so, what were the reasons for the laying-off of these men; and whether there is any prospect of increased employment there in the near future.

I am informed by Irish Steel Holdings Ltd. that the number of men laid off during week from 19th-24th November was 24 and not 60 as stated by the Deputy. These men had been retained in employment following the interruption of steelwork production for the normal operation of demolishing and rebuilding an open hearth furnace. In this connection, I am informed by Irish Steel Holdings Ltd. that it is anticipated that between now and Christmas about 100 men will be re-employed by the company.
