Vol. 198 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seizure of Christmas Presents.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an assurance that presents for members of their families from Irish workers returning from Great Britain for Christmas holidays will not be seized by customs officers.

I regret that I am unable to give such a categorical assurance. The total abolition of customs duty or the total suspension of import prohibitions in respect of Christmas presents imported in the baggage of visitors would not be practicable and, where there is attempted evasion, the Customs powers of seizure are essential.

For details of the concessions applicable to baggage and gift parcels, I would refer the Deputy to my answer to questions put down by him on the 29th November, 1961.
