Vol. 198 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Turbary Rights.

48.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the turbary rights of certain farmers are being seriously menaced in the Glen Killamoy district of the Heweston property in the Arigna area of County Sligo by a new company interested in open-cast coal mining; and if he will take action to protect the interests of the people concerned.

I am informed that open-cast coal mining has commenced recently in the townland of Glen, County Sligo. As the mineral rights are privately owned, the grant of a State mining lease does not arise. The preservation of turbary rights is a matter for settlement between the mining operator and the owners of these rights. The matter is not one in which I have any statutory responsibility.
