58.

asked the Minister for Local Government what major road works schemes have been recommended to his Department for sanction by (a) Kildare County Council, (b) Meath County Council and (c) Westmeath County Council, in Kildare constituency; and what schemes have been sanctioned, giving details of them.

(a) A £102,262 scheme to continue the improvement of their section of the Dublin-Naas Road has been approved for execution by Kildare County Council in the current year. Other improvement schemes to be carried out by the county council this year include a £10,000 scheme on the Athy-Carlow road and a £4,000 scheme on the Kilcullen-Carlow road, but details of these works have not yet been submitted to the Department for approval. A £51,000 scheme for the reconstruction of the Spin Bridge, Kilcock, by Kildare County Council has been approved and a 75 per cent special grant has been allocated towards the cost. (b) Meath County Council have proposed the following schemes on the Dublin-Sligo Road in the area referred to:

(1) Between Kinnegad and Ardnamullen

£23,585

(2) At Ardnamullen

£3,262

(3) Between Ardnamullen and Leinster Bridge

£44,709

(4) Between Blackwater Bridge and Enfield

£28,219

(5) Between Enfield and Cloncurry

£10,000

Following discussion between the Department's inspector and the county engineer, the estimate for scheme (4) was reduced to £20,212 and that scheme and scheme (1) have been approved. Some revisions are to be made in the remaining schemes and revised proposals are awaited. (c) The Westmeath County Council programme for the current year includes a £30,000 improvement scheme on the Tyrellspass-Rochford Bridge section of the Athlone-Kinnegad Road, the details of which have yet to be submitted to the Department. A £4,000 scheme on the Kinnegad-Mullingar Road has been approved.

Will the Minister say if in the case of schemes which have been sanctioned, the council are free to proceed with the work?
