Vol. 198 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Selection for Secondary Education.

78.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that his speech made at the annual dinner dance of the Graduates' Association of the National University of Ireland on 29th November, indicating that some kind of selection test may in future be introduced for entry into secondary schools, has caused considerable concern; and if he is now in a position to make a more definite statement.

79.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that his recent statements on future educational policy are causing grave concern to those people providing secondary education, especially in centres where old schools are being replaced or extended to meet present-day demands; and, if so, if he will clarify his Department's policy in the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 78 and 79 together. I will quote for the information of the Deputies the reply in relation to this matter which I gave Deputy Treacy on 5th of this month. That reply reads:

I made it clear in these statements that I was merely indicating the lines on which my thoughts had been running. In relation to the matter of selection for academic secondary education there is available in my Department information as to the position in various countries.

It is not to be inferred from that fact, however, that when conclusions have been arrived at, they will be modelled on the position in any particular country.

I fail to see, therefore, what cause there can be for considerable concern except, perhaps, in the minds of people who are thinking in terms of an 11 plus examination which is something that I am not contemplating.

The remaining Questions will appear on to-morrow's Order Paper.
