Vol. 198 No. 7

Committee on Finance. - Defence Forces (Pensions) (Amendment) (No. 2) Scheme, 1962: Motion of Confirmation.

I move:

That the Defence Forces (Pensions) (Amendment) (No. 2) Scheme 1962 prepared by the Minister for Defence with the consent of the Minister for Finance under Sections 2, 3 and 5 of the Defence Forces (Pensions) Act 1932 and Section 4 of the Defence Forces (Pensions) (Amendment) Act 1938 and laid before the House on the 26th day of July, 1962, be confirmed.

The purpose of this scheme is to provide for proportionate increases in the retired pay, pensions and gratuities of retired or discharged members of the Defence Forces who, before retirement or discharge, enjoyed the benefit of the further increase in service pay which came into operation with effect from the 1st November, 1961.

It is exactly similar in form to the scheme which dealt with the increases consequent on the service pay increase of 1st February, 1961, and I do not think that there is anything to be added to what I said in connection with that scheme.

Deputy Tully says these officers did get the increase. Is it under this Order they got it?

The schemes must be construed together.

It is very involved.

Question put and agreed to.
