Vol. 198 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unsolved Murders.

58.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of unsolved murders at present remaining under investigation by the Gardaí; and whether he proposes to take any additional special action with a view to solving these cases.

It is necessary to relate the answer to some specific period, and I am taking a period of ten years which is that suggested in the most recent Parliamentary Questions on this subject. On that basis the answer is seven, one of which relates to the death of a newly-born infant, a case which, if solved, might rank as infanticide rather than murder. Every action that is possible is already being taken in these cases.
