Vol. 199 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Reactor Cattle.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the reason for the considerable delay, in some cases more than two months, before his Department send a valuer to farmers in County Limerick wishing to dispose of reactor cows; and whether he proposes to take any steps to expedite the clearance of reactors in the country so that dairy farmers will be in a position to purchase replacements before the commencement of the milking season.

My Department has purchased reactors at the rate of 800 a week in County Limerick during the month of December, which is not a bad performance. The weather since then, of course, has been unfavourable but, apart from this, it is not possible or reasonable to expect that we can respond immediately in all cases however anxious we are to do so. Arrangements have been made to open a separate district office in Limerick in the near future to deal with the administration of the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme in County Limerick.
