Vol. 199 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Display of Shaw Statue.

58.

asked the Minister for Education whether Dublin citizens can expect to see Troubetzkoy's statue of George Bernard Shaw on permanent outdoor display during the coming summer; and, if so, if he will make use of suitable vacant sites at St. Stephen's Green for this desirable purpose.

As stated in my reply to the Deputy's question on 14th November, 1962, this statue forms part of the collection of works of art for which the Board of Governors and Guardians of the National Gallery of Ireland is responsible. The Deputy's proposal has been brought to the attention of the Board.

Is there any prospect that the Board will indicate its reaction to the Deputy's proposal at an early date? Is there any prospect of their letting us know what is to happen?

The actual position at the moment is that I do not think the Board would be legally entitled to take this step but I am not in a position to say what they would do if they knew that they were legally entitled to do it.
