RTÉ, TG4, Irish Film Board & Prof Kevin Rafter to appear before Communications, Climate Action and Environment Committee

21 Nov 2016, 11:34

The Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment will resume its hearings on public service broadcasting tomorrow, Tuesday 22 November 2016.

The schedule for tomorrow’s meeting is:

Session A: 5 p.m. Professor Kevin Rafter, School of Communications, Dublin City University; Representatives from the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland and Screen Producers Ireland
Session B: 6 p.m. Representatives from Raidió Teilifís Éireann; TG4; and Irish Film Board

Committee Chair Hildegarde Naughton TD said: “The Broadcasting Act provides the basis for Public Service Broadcasting in Ireland and sets out the provisions relating to the regulation, operation and funding of the Public Service Broadcasting corporations, RTÉ and TG4. Both of these stations are funded through a mix of licence fee revenues, Exchequer grant and commercial revenue. However, like much of the rest of the world, public service broadcasters in Ireland face many challenges such as a changing marketplace, increased competition and technological changes in how the public receive and view content. Tomorrow, we will continue our hearings on public service broadcasting when we will meet with representatives from a number of organisations, including RTÉ, TG4, the Irish Film Board, Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, Screen Producers Ireland, and also with Professor Kevin Rafter from the School of Communications in DCU. It will provide the Committee with an opportunity to examine the public service broadcasting landscape in Ireland, in particular the requisite level of public funding required for stations to fulfil their public service objectives, the future of the licence fee and access to advertising revenue, with a key players in the broadcasting sector.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 November 2016.
