Vol. 199 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Difficulties Caused to Blind Persons.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to a letter sent to Dublin Corporation by the National League for the Blind, drawing attention to the difficulties caused to blind persons by the indiscriminate erection by local authorities of posts, notices, etc.; and whether he will ensure that all local authorities bear in mind, when erecting such posts, signs, etc., the needs and difficulties of the blind.

I have not seen the letter referred to by the Deputy but I have seen a newspaper report referring to the matter. The provision of posts and other devices on footpaths in Dublin city is a matter, primarily, for the Dublin Corporation, who have to indicate as clearly as possible the limits of parking places and parking restrictions and have to take account of public needs and statutory requirements in regard to traffic control, public lighting and other services. Subject to that, I am sure that they take reasonable account of representations made to them regarding the siting of posts and other such devices, and may be relied upon to deal with the letter from the National League for the Blind accordingly.
