Vol. 199 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of GATT.

7.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the reasons why this country's application for membership of GATT has not been successful; and if the high level of industrial protection is one of them.

It is not correct to suggest that Ireland's application for membership has been unsuccessful. The position is that, at the suggestion of the Irish Government, consideration of our application was deferred pending the outcome of the negotiations on our application for membership of the European Economic Community.

Could the Taoiseach state if that application is to be pursued ?

I told the Dáil last week that we had not made a final decision.
