Vol. 199 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clontarf Girls' School.

80.

asked the Minister for Education if any proposals have been sanctioned for the provision of indoor toilets in lieu of the present grossly unsatisfactory outdoor facilities in Belgrove girls' national school, Clontarf, Dublin and for the improvement of the present inadequate heating; and what is the present position in regard to these matters, in view of the fact that the school had to close because of the lack of minimal amenities during the recent cold spell.

81.

asked the Minister for Education if any plans have been sanctioned for the provision of new premises for Belgrove girls' national school, Clontarf, Dublin; and, if not, why, in view of the lack of accommodation at present.

82.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of the State grant, if any, sanctioned for the replacement of Belgrove girls' national school, Clontarf, Dublin.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 80, 81 and 82 together.

The Commissioners of Public Works have recommended that Belgrove girls' national school be replaced by a new building. The necessary preliminary arrangements are being made. My Department will not be in a position to sanction a grant towards the cost of the new school until these arrangements have been completed.

I understand that certain works have been carried out to improve the heating facilities at the existing school.

Would the Minister say where the new school will be located and when it is likely building operations will commence?

It is only at the preliminary stage at the moment. The planning of the school will be a matter for the manager's architect and I am not in a position to give the Deputy the information he seeks.

Is it not even possible to give an idea where it will be located? Will it be on the present site?

I have not that information.

Could the Minister indicate how long it is likely to take before he will be in a position to supply this information?

Since it depends on the activities of people other than myself, I could not say.

Could the Minister perhaps spur on these other people?

I shall do what I can.

83.

asked the Minister for Education how many school days Belgrove girls' national school, Clontarf, Dublin, has been closed since reopening after Christmas, and the reason for closure.

The school in question was closed on six days since reopening after Christmas. The reason for the closing was that the water pipes were frozen.
