Vol. 200 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Notice of Termination of Employment.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that in other countries it is a growing practice for workers with long service to be granted a correspondingly lengthened period for notice of termination of employment; and if he will introduce legislation providing that the length of notice of termination of employment of a worker should be extended, depending on the number of years which he has worked in the post concerned.

I am aware that in a number of countries provision is made, in legislation or by other methods, for a lengthening of the period of notice in proportion to the length of service of workers.

In this country matters of this kind are not regulated by statute but are determined in the light of the contract of service or other agreements which are entered into by the employer and worker. I am not convinced that it would be wise to introduce legislation that would interfere with this arrangement. I believe, however, that the question will be considered by this year's International Labour Conference and I propose to consider it again when the report of the Conference is available.

The Minister will not publish a White Paper about it?
