Vol. 200 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Detention of Persons Awaiting Trial.

92.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to a report of a person who was detained in custody for five months in Mountjoy Prison without being brought to trial; whether there are any other cases where persons are being held for a protracted period; and whether he will take steps to ensure that such cases are brought to trial more speedily in future.

The only case of this kind, in which two persons are involved, is sub judice and I do not think that it would be right to make any reference to it until it is disposed of.

All possible steps are taken to ensure that cases are brought to trial without avoidable delay.
