Vol. 200 No. 2

Written Answers. - Housing Needs.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government (i) the total number of houses needed in (a) Dublin (b) Cork (c) Galway and (d) Limerick cities to rehouse in suitable accommodation applicants needing such rehousing, (ii) the estimated total cost of completion of such a project, and (iii) the current annual average rate of such housing replacement in each area.

It is presumed that the Question relates to dwelling for those eligible for housing under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts.

(i) It is a function of each housing authority to prepare building proposals from time to time to meet the needs of persons eligible for local authority housing. A statement of such needs is not usually furnished to my Department unless in conjunction with specific housing proposals.

The latest information available in my Department in regard to each of the cities is as follows:—

(a) Dublin: According to the latest figures available there are slightly over 4,000 families on the Dublin Corporation's effective waiting list for rehousing, of which the Corporation anticipates that, having regard to such factors as the increasing rate of annual completion of new houses and decreases in the annual vacancy rate, 3,000 will be rehoused in the next two and a half years.

(b) Cork: There were 1,106 eligible applicants on hands on 1st June, 1962.

(c) Galway: The most recent survey of unfit housing disclosed 162 unfit dwellings of which 84 were incapable of economic repair. 40 of the 84 dwellings were occupied by families of 1 or 2 persons.

(d) Limerick: In April, 1962 there were 1,175 applicants listed by the Corporation.

(ii) No estimate of the ultimate cost of the further local authority dwellings to be provided in these cities has been drawn up.

(iii) The position at 31st December, 1962 was:—
