In the five-year period referred to in the Question, no customs duties were chargeable on imported footwear up to the 10th August, 1961. Since that date duty is charged on imported footwear at the rate of 75 per cent ad valorem, full rate, and 50 per cent ad valorem preferential rate, confined to goods of the United Kingdom and Canadian origin in each case. In accordance with a general licence, which is effective whilst the restrictions on the importation of footwear under the Control of Imports Acts are in force, footwear may be imported without payment of the duties specified above.
With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate a statement in the Official Report giving the quantity and value of the imports of footwear by country of origin in the past five years.
