Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recognition of Teaching Service.

40.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that Northern Ireland and England recognise all teaching services in the Republic for salary purposes, he will now give similar recognition, in this country, for services in Northern Ireland and England.

I would refer the Deputy to my replies of 18th May, 1961, 22nd March, 1962, 27th March, 1962, 23rd May, 1962 and 15th November, 1962, to similar questions.

I have nothing to add to these replies except to repeat what I have said publicly in the meantime. My statement was "that I am not unaware of the special position of the Six Counties as part of our Irish nation. For that reason I am not without hope that we may be in a position to work out a suitable scheme in relation to service given in that area."

Surely, if the Minister can give special treatment to teachers who go to Africa and other nations—which is desirable—he will at least be able to recognise Irish teachers in the Six Counties as Irishmen and Irishwomen?

I am not without hope that we shall be in a position to work out a suitable scheme——

We are working on it at the moment but I do not know when we shall be able to work it out.
