Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Drainage of Kerry River.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that great disappointment was felt at the meeting of Kerry County Council held on the 25th February, 1963, when his letter in connection with the request to have the Maine catchment drainage extended to the Brown Flesk was read, especially in view of the fact that the local officials and members of the county council, after much deliberation, obtained the consent of the local farmers to the request of his Department to give the necessary land for the carrying out of such work; whether he is aware that such an extension would result in the saving of very large sums in the laying of a new road in the area; and whether, in view of these considerations, he will reconsider his decision.

As the Deputy is aware, there have been extensive engineering investigations of the feasibility of carrying out drainage works on the Brown Flesk river and the results indicate that the cost of the works would be altogether out of proportion to the benefit to be derived. Following the meeting of the county council on 25th February to which the Deputy refers, the Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to consider the possibility of works on 1½ miles of the lower section of the river. The previous investigations offer little prospect of such a limited scheme proving economic but it is a new proposition which it is proposed to investigate now. The consideration referred to by the county council of a saving in cost of road making in the area will be borne in mind. The result of the investigations will be communicated to the county council and to the Deputy.
