Vol. 200 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Military Medal for Gallantry.

57.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of initial recommendations made by officers for the award of the Military Medal for Gallantry in each calendar year since troops were first posted to the Congo.

I consider it undesirable to give the number of initial recommendations made by officers for the award of An Bonn Míleata Calmachta (Military Medal for Gallantry).

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his Question (No. 85) on 20th February, 1963. I repeat that the award of this Medal is made by me on the recommendation of a Military Board appointed by the Chief of Staff.

58.

asked the Minister for Defence the rank of the members of the two military boards so far set up by the Chief of Staff to consider initial recommendations for the award of the Military Medal for Gallantry, and the number of members of each board who have combat experience under active service conditions.

The rank of members of the two military boards set up to consider initial recommendations for the award of An Bonn Míleata Calmachta (Military Medal for Gallantry) is as follows:— 1st Board: 1 Cornal; 1 Lefteanant-Cornal and 1 Ceannfort, 2nd Board: 1 Cornal; 2 Lefteanant-Cornal and 1 Ceannfort.

Combat experience is not a necessary qualification for membership of the Board.
