Vol. 201 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Poliomyelitis Immunisation.

11.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Health what percentage of the age groups up to fifteen years was immunised against anterior poliomyelitis during the years 1960, 1961 and 1962; what percentage of these groups subsequently developed anterior poliomyelitis; and, of those who did not get immunised, what percentage developed it in each group.

The information requested by the Deputies, in so far as it is available, is contained in a statement containing a number of figures which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The following is the statement:

Figures of vaccinations against poliomyelitis are available only in respect of the schemes operated by local health authorities. It is not, therefore, possible to give information in the exact form requested by the Deputies.

The numbers of children under 15 years of age who received the full course of three injections under these schemes in the years referred to are as follows:

196052,458—6% of the under 15 age-group.

196183,539—10% of the under 15 age-group.

196239,927—5% of the under 15 age-group.

The overall proportion of children in the under 15 age-group protected by vaccination at any one time would be in excess of these annual percentages as children vaccinated in previous years under local authority schemes and vaccinations carried out privately would have to be taken into account.

The numbers of cases of the disease which occurred in the under 15 age-group in the same years were:

1960

152

1961

47

1962

40

The numbers of these cases who had had the full course of vaccination were:

1960

7

1961

5

1962

5

It is not possible to particularise the years in which the children referred to were vaccinated.
