Vol. 201 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compulsory Acquisition of Land.

42.

Mr. Browne

asked the Minister for Lands if it is proposed in the new Land Bill to compulsorily acquire lands which have been let for a five-year period; and if the five-year period will be from the enactment of the new Bill, or for any five-year period for which the lands have been let, or uninhabited.

At this stage, I am not disposed to deal categorically with the points mentioned by the Deputy. As already intimated, it is hoped to introduce the Bill in the present session, and I suggest that he await the text. The general position relating to the matters raised was given in reply to a question by Deputy O'Reilly on 12th December last to which I would refer the Deputy.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there are a number of individuals going around the countryside suggesting to the people that, having regard to the Government's intentions, it would be advisable for them to sell their little bits of land and get a better price for it than to wait for the new Land Bill? Would the Parliamentary Secretary not consider it advisable to make a statement on the full implications of this new Bill?

I am not responsible for the statements of certain people who are alleged to be going about the country. The statements already made about the new Bill have fully explained its nature.

Will the text of the Bill be provided before Easter?

It is being drafted at the moment.
