Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Austin Deasy

Question:

271 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if arrests have been made as a result of investigations into sheep smuggling surrounding the recent investigations into events surrounding the outbreak of foot and mouth disease; if materials have been confiscated from individuals or businesses involved in the agricultural industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10587/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that the Garda Síochána has been involved in the investigation of foot and mouth disease in this jurisdiction since the confirmation of the disease in Meigh, County Armagh on 28 February. I understand that the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation were directed to co-ordinate investigations, and that a number of incident rooms have been set up. I am also informed that gardaí are in full-time contact with personnel from the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland.

I am further informed that all relevant legislation is being utilised and arrests have been made where appropriate. Searches have been carried out resulting in the seizure of documentation and other items for examination. Garda investigations are ongoing and I understand that it is envisaged that a number of cases will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for direction.
